IW: Geography and Formation by ~draco13:icondraco13:

Located in the heart of the Southern Continent, on the edge of the Sea of Azov, lies a series of mountains known for volcanic activity.  Centuries ago, when never a Pernese foot set upon this land, twin calderas erupted, sending their clouds of ash and smoke into the heavens, drowning the sun for days.  The areas around these two mountains were devastated, devoid of all animal and plant.  All that remained was the ash and stone of the mountains.

Over time, the massive cliffs of the twin mountains collapsed in on themselves, creating one crater, separated only by a small cliff of rock and what remained of the two walls.  Eventually, life began appearing on the hills and mountains about the behemoths.  Fireweed grew first, as it often does, followed quickly by heather and moss.  Soon, small trees, hardy and rough, began showing their faces.  The land was returning, reclaiming what the mountains took.

Even water began seizing what had been taken from it.  When the volcanoes erupted, their ash and stone had blocked a river that wound its way from the mountains and into the Sea.  Almost as if in revenge, this river carved a path through the two mountains themselves.  Small at first, the river widened to what it is today, crashing over the cliff separating the two mountains, winding its way to the lowest point, the heart of the eruption.  The two mountains could do nothing to stop this violation of their might, for they had long since died, their fires just enough to heat the sands of one chamber.  And so they rested, hoping that one day they could reclaim what was rightfully theirs.

But such a day will never come.  For after the Fall of the Weyrs, a new haven for riders was needed.  And so came the dragons to the realm of giants, the Western Barrier Range.  So they came to the dead titans, their shells open for new life to take them.  And the riders supplied.  Thus was the formation of the Twin Bowls.  Thus were the beginnings of Iayla Weyr.  Thus, from chaos, destruction, and death, peace, hope, and renewal arise.

~~~~~~~~~
Carved over turns and turns by those willing to sacrifice for their home, Iayla Weyr holds close to 300 individual weyrs.  It had never been used during a Pass simply because it was too small to hold the fighting strength needed to combat the airborne menace of Thread.  Thus is remained uninhabited by all but tunnelsnakes, wherries, and the occasional feline.  It was then that the original founders, the first thirty-three riders of Iayla came and saw what their namesake had left for them.  A volcano, two volcanoes, dead and soulless, able to house hundreds of dragons should the need arise.  It was here that they staked their claim and began the slow, back-breaking work of bending the rock to their will.  They left much of it untouched, however, left its natural beauty intact for those who come after to admire as well.  As their founder had the one day she had come.
Turns upon turns upon turns of labor went into making the Weyr habitable for humans as well as dragons.  The thirty-three founders never saw their Weyr to completion, instead giving those after them a plan for a future that was followed to make Iayla the Weyr it is today.
Over the many turns of construction, the weyr ledges currently housing dragons are equipped with a bathing chamber, the water for the bath supplied by the river and passed under the Sands which heat it to a comfortable temperature.  The pumps that supply the water to the upper weyrs are driven by a waterwheel built at the base of the falls separating the two Bowls, and also pump water to the Kitchens and Infirmary.  A small, underground spring supplies water to the public baths located in the Lower Caverns.
And so lies Iayla Weyr, a masterpiece of nature, a haven of dragons.
Author's Comments
Kay. The first half of this piece is about the formation of Iayla Weyr and how it came to have its Twin Bowls. The second half is slightly unfinished, as some of the information has yet to be finalized. Otherwise, this is Iayla Weyr!
And if anyone knows geography better than I do and can give me a few pointers, I am more than willing to take them.
And yes, the last sentence is lame. Like I said, it's not quite done but I needed some way to make it feel complete even though it isn't.
You might want to add that the whole Dragonriders of Pern thing belongs to Anne McCaffery, not you.
92% of teens would die if Abercrombie and Fitch said it wasn't cool to breathe. Put this in your sig if you'd be one of the 8% laughing their butts off.
